What is the purpose of this scholarship?

The scholarship is intended to identify students who can serve as role models to other teens who suffer from asthma or significant allergies. The student who is judged to best suit this role will receive a $1000 scholarship.

Who is eligible?

All high school seniors with asthma or significant allergies who live in one of the six New England states, who plan to begin their higher education after high school, who have attained a level of excellence in academic and/or extra-curricular activity, and who submit complete applications postmarked by the deadline for entry are eligible. The winners will be expected to appear at two events and speak to the press.

What is the deadline for entry?

All applications must be postmarked by (to be determined for 20008) to be considered eligible for entry into the contest.

How do I enter the competition and submit an essay?

The downloadable application should be completed by the student, personal physician, parent/guardian, and principal/guidance counselor/teacher/or coach. An official transcript must accompany the completed application, as must an essay of no more than one typewritten page, written by the student who is applying. The application must also include a stamped self-addressed envelope, the address(es) of local newspapers where an article can be sent if you are selected a winner or runner-up, and signed permissions to use your essay in the media to benefit other teens with asthma and/or allergies. (Note: only complete applications will be considered.)

How is the winner selected?

Winners are selected by the New England Chapter of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, a non-profit organization which is a major voluntary group concerned with asthma and allergic diseases. The judges will evaluate eligible student's academic record, reference, and essay. The winner will be notified by mail. All decisions of the judges are final. No material will be returned.

How much is the scholarship?

The first-place winner will be chosen and will  receive a scholarship of  amount to be determined for 2008. In addition, between five and twenty-five runners-up from geographically dispersed areas throughout New England will be awarded Honorable Mention, and announcements will be sent to their local newspapers.
